First we kept it flat on the concrete—I didn’t want it to wobble and give him any reason to fear it—and led him across during regular leash training. After a few days, we added incline by laying it across the door threshold and then by leaning it on sturdy wood (see video). Each training session was very short and fun! We then brought the ramp into the house and leaned it on the couch for increased incline. The dog loved climbing the ramp onto the couch.
Today we finally used the ramp to get him into the jeep. We initially put him at a sit and allowed him to see us place a treat in the jeep to focus his attention on the treat and not the ramp. Then we stood on each side to prevent his stepping off the side. The incline was steep, and we had to keep our hands on his backside to give him a boost, but it was still much easier than lifting him. He went up and down the ramp twice with no trouble.
We will continue to train with the ramp to make sure he does not lose confidence with it, but I can recommend this product.Ramp is awesome, handles fell off after two usesThe ramp is awesome I can't lift anything heavy and it's easy to lift up and unfold. Also the handles fell off after the Second Use. It's just a thin woven handle fastened with a screw and a tiny washer. They handle pulled right through the screw. I suppose I could get bigger washers. It would be great if it had a thick handle. Took about 6 minutes to get my dog to figure it out and now she walks on it to save her from twisting her paws again.2.0 out of 5 stars NOT for high sitting trucks. In the description, we read that it was good for high sitting vehicles. We thought that this would be long enough but the ramp is too steep. We had to put a step under the ramp to make it work but it is still pretty steep. The width is okay but could be a little wider for stability for the lab. If they become distracted or don't want to load, the ramp slips and our dog actually jumped off. It takes both me and my husband to load them because the ramp slides from side to side and again the steepness is an issue. The tailgate when lowered is smooth and slick so the ramp sits on the slick surface and moves side to side. If I had an SUV with a plastic or rubbery surface this probably wouldn't be a problem but for our truck it is a BIG problem and like I said it takes 2 to hold the ramp steady so our dog doesn't fall or the ramp slide side to side and the dog fall or jump off. The surface has a non-slick, gritty stick-on paper type surface which tore on the first try because of the steepness and my dog bailing off of it. The fold up feature is nice and works well but when folded over it still takes up quite a bit of space. The plastic is durable and does hold the weight of our dogs without bowing so that is a good feature.
Would I buy this again? Probably not because of the slipping, the steepness and because of how much room it takes up. I would look more for a telescoping feature that lays flat and that can extend to meet the need of our high sitting truck. I would also buy or build a ramp that was wider and would make a clip on feature so that it didn't slide for a safety and ease of loading. So far so goodI bought this after my 68 pound mixed border collie wasn't able to get up and then once I got her up I had to help her into the back seat of the car ...MoreI bought this after my 68 pound mixed border collie wasn't able to get up and then once I got her up I had to help her into the back seat of the car when she stumbled trying to get her into the car to go to the animal ER. Then she didn't want to get out and it took two of us to get her out of the car when she held her leg up as if it was hurt when she finally got to the ground. She was diagnosed with bad arthritis in her spine and fusing of some of the spinal bones. I got the ramp so it'd be easier on her. After medication she's doing much better. But we trained on the ramp, she didn't want anything to do with it at first so I tried it with treats on the garage floor. A small treat when she got on the ramp on the floor and then another when she finished walking across. We tried that a few times and then put it up into the back seat. Again a bit hesitant but treats getting up into the car from the ramp and then down to the ground helped a lot. The next time we used the ramp she went right up.4.0 out of 5 stars Surface is sharpe and abrasive.Arrived within 2days , set up was easy . My 20lb dog was having issues with rear legs . The surface is like course grit sandpaper . I rubbed my fingers across it . It’s extremely sharp and abrasive. I may end up covering surface with fake turf. The dog used it first time then was reluctant. 2 days later I checked her paws and they had a cut . Definitely going to have to cover it with carpet or turf.5.0 out of 5 stars Works for mini pigs and senior dogs!Easy to fold and tote around. So far it’s working for my mini pig and my senior dog :)
I do suggest covering it with a new surface as the surface is sturdy and rough yes, but maybe a tad too much for hooves or tiny dog paws. So I’ve recently cut up a yoga mat and put that on top and that solves the issue. It is rather narrow, was expecting more wide depth but aside from that all is wonderful.5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my 65lb terrierEasiest ramp to use. Literally pulled it out of the box, unfolded it, and leaned it against the trunk of my car. My dog is 65lbs and as you can see he is slightly jumping on the ramp at the bottom as he is used to jumping in the car. He recently sprained his knee and is now 6 years old and I am no longer allowing him to jump in the car and he is too heavy to constantly pick up. He was scared to use ramp at first, but using a leash to guide him helped. Use treats and a lot of praise. I have a trailblazer and the height is perfect.Ideal for our elderly dog to get in and out the carJust what we wanted, very happy with purchase, easy to use and take in car, good grip on ramp and our dog seems very happy with it too!5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly fits our needs!I have been looking all over for a sturdy, lightweight, easily transportable car ramp for our aging Collie. There are manyramps out there, but not that show the use with a normal car side door. Most show pictures of the ramp being used on the back of a large pick-up truck, or with the sliding doors of a van, or suv. The PetSafe Happy Ride Folding 62" Pet Ramp works perfectly with our Nissan Sentra. We also use a pet hammock in the back seat so our dog does not fall into the back seat floor on our rides. The hammock also helps support the upper left area of the ramp. I also purchased a strap system that can be hooked from the car side door frame to the upper ramp for support, however with the hammock, I find I do not need the strap. Our dog is 79 pounds and the ramp is 100% sturdy and secure. Yes, the walking surface is rough (I could easily file my nails on it) but it does not seem to bother my dog at all. The pads of her feet are not bothered by this. We had attempted to make our own ramp which she refused to use, it was wobbly and difficult to fit it precisely in the door opening, but the PetSafe ramp fits just right, and is long enough to not be too steep of a climb into the car. Very happy with my purchase! The heavy duty portable folding dog ramp is a great product! The ramp is sturdy enough to support my dogs weight, and yet is not too heavy for me to carry or position it. It easily folds making it convenient for storing it away when not needed. The non-slip surface makes it easy for my dog to go up and down the ramp, and has been great for my dog that has issues with her hind legs that made it hard for her to negotiate stairs or getting in and out of a vehicle. Highly recommend!
