Special Barbecue Sauce for Dogs
Barbecue season is upon us and people are enjoying all kinds of delicious barbecue foods and sauces, but often these are not good for dogs. Most commercially available barbecue sauces contain ingredients that are harmful to pets, such as onions, garlic, and certain spices. In order to make it safe for dogs to enjoy barbecue too, we can make a dog-friendly barbecue sauce ourselves. Here is an easy, healthy and delicious BBQ sauce recipe for dogs.

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup unsalted chicken broth (or water)
- 1 tablespoon honey (make sure it’s the type your dog can eat)
- 1 tablespoon ketchup (no salt, no sugar, no additives)
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon chopped dried parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (optional, if dog is ok with it)
Instructions
- Prepare ingredients: make sure all ingredients are fresh and safe for your dog to eat.
- Mix the base liquid: in a small bowl, combine the unsalted chicken stock and honey and mix well.
- Add Tartness: Add apple cider vinegar to the base liquid to add a tartness to the sauce that will also help enhance the flavor.
- Blend the fats: add olive oil, which not only adds smoothness to the barbecue sauce, but also provides healthy fats.
- Add spices: add dried parsley, thyme and rosemary to the bowl; these spices are safe for dogs and add aroma.
- Adjust the flavor: Add a small amount of ground black pepper if desired, but make sure your dog can handle it.
- Blend well: Use a blender or spoon to combine all ingredients until the barbecue sauce is smooth and grain-free.
- Chill: Chill the barbecue sauce in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors of the spices to fully integrate.
- USE: Once chilled, the barbecue sauce is ready to use. Spread it on your dog’s barbecue for added flavor.
